Dell Inspiron 9400 max. RAM ?

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 which I use at home. It has 2GB of RAM and I decided to upgrade the RAM. I found a 2x2GB = 4GB memory kit at EBAY for a fair price.

I recalled that the Inspiron 9400 has a maximum of 2GB of installabe RAM. So I was a little bit unsure if I really should buy the kit. I searched the internet and as always I got some hints  that the Laptop would not support 4GB. But there were also search results saying that 4GB are no problem at all. It depends …

One post said that you could use Sisoftware Sandra Light to determine the max. installable Ram for a PC or Laptop.

So I decided to download the software, which is available for free and give it a try. Here ist the result.

maxram

The next step was to order the memory kit …

Demonstration Application for XPages

As the name suggests the Demonstration Application for XPages is a web based IBMLotus Domino R8.5 application used to demonstrate many aspects of the new XPagestechnology.

Launched via a web browser, the user can navigate through the provided links menu and see how many of the XPages features might work on a real application.

xpagesdemo

The demo application can also be worked with in IBM Lotus Domino Designer R8.5.

Here the user can see how the application is put together and inspire the user to reuse theXPages features displayed in their own Domino 8.5 applications.

The Demonstration Application for XPages has been released on Openntf.org under theApache v2 license.

Blackberry, Bluetooth and a group of persons

One of our Blackberry users complained that the bluetooth connection between the device and his AUDI became unstable for some reason.

He sent me an error message saying: Uncaught exception:java.lang.ClassCastException

I googled for this error message an found an entry in www.blackberryforums.com saying that this error could be caused by adding a group to the personal addressbook. Hard to believe but nowadays nothing seems to be impossible. I phoned the user and asked if he recently added a group to his addressbook. He confirmed. So I asked him to delete the group and to try bluetooth again.

Today he confirmed that after deleting the group from his addressbook, the bluetooth connection works again.

The device is a BB 8800 running with firmware 4.2.1.101. As the forum thread is from 2006, I guess that this error is already fixed in a newer firmware version. Have to check this.

DAOS: 2048 bit issue hotfixed

I installed DAOS on one of our servers and immediately ran into a problem, Christian Brandlehner describes here.

I opened a ticket with IBM and today they provided me with a hotfix to solve the issue.

As I was already running Domino 8.5HF1, they had to compile a new hotfix that contains both,  HF1 and the fix for the DAOS 2048 bit problem. This hotfix is called HF114.

Thanks again to Tony O’Neill from IBM support.

Lead Manager XPage Sample

IBM recently started a new project on OpenNTF ( Lead Manager X ) The Lead Manager is a sample CRM application. It shows how to take an existing suite of Notes applications, and give them a new XPage based web front end. The existing rich client application (and the databases they reside in) are completely unchanged.

There is a video tour of the application on YouTube and an application overview on the Lotus Domino Designer Wiki.

Thanks to Jo Grant and Craig Wolpert for sharing the application and providing the full source code.

Watch Traveler Logfiles In Realtime

Lotus Notes Traveler logs errors and other information to text files in the  \traveler\logs\ directory located under the Domino data directory.

Normally you have to go to this directory, select the file containing the information you want to examine and open the file with a text browser.

For troubleshooting issues it would be better, if you could see the log output at the moment the error occurs. To do so, you can use tail.exe from the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools.

The Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools are a set of tools to help administrators streamline management tasks such as troubleshooting operating system issues, managing Active Directory®, configuring networking and security features, and automating application deployment.

Create a .bat or .cmd file and call  tail.exe along with the log file using the -f option.

D:\programme\IBM\Lotus\Domino\tail.exe -f D:\Programme\IBM\Lotus\Domino\data\traveler\logs\NTSActivity_0.log

travlog

Now you can watch the log file content in realtime.

SnTT: Notes Mail “Inbox Maintenance”

This feature,  introduced with Notes/Domino 8.0, will “clean-up” user mail Inbox folders. In other words, it removes ( not deletes ) documents from the Notes/Domino mail Inbox. The goal is to improve server performance by reducing user mail Inbox size. An Inbox folder with fewer documents performs better because it has fewer documents to index and replicate.

Frequently asked questions are answered in this FAQ. One of the questions is about how the feature works in a mixed environment with 7.x and 8.x mail templates.

The FAQ says that Inbox Maintenace only works with 8.x mail templates. But it is very easy to even enable a 7.x mail template.

The only thing you have to do is to copy the LotusInboxCleanup agent from mail8.ntf to your 7.x template.

The server looks for the existance of the agent and triggers it  if available. Otherwise it will skip databases that do not inherit the agent.

Although the agent is of type scheduled, you do not have to setup a schedule. The agent is invoked by the server.

Settings are on the “Server Tasks -> Administration process” tab of the server document.

Impressive DAOS results

I recently ran daosest 1.1 on one of our production server.  The test took almost 48 hours. Here are the results.

Total DB’s analyzed: 957
Total DB’s skipped due to errors: 0
Total Size of NSF’s Examined: 1023.8 GB
Total Attachments found: 3070488
Total Duplicate Attachments found: 2084628
Total DAOS Eligible Attachments: 3070488
Estimated Size of DAOSified NSF’s: 89.6 GB
Estimate Size of DAOS dir: 335.0 GB
Total Disk Savings: 636.8 GB

I am really impressed. Never expected the calculated total disk savings.

If you want to use DAOS in a clustered environmen, here is some information by Paul Mooney.

We’ll do everything with HASH but smoke it

Andrew Pollack will present a session about HASH at Entwicklercamp 2009 in Gelsenkirchen. Here is the session abstract:

This will be an entire session on using HASH values, HASH tables, and HASH maps.
We’ll use it to compile a report in memory from two different data sources without reading and sorting all the documents.
We’ll use it to compare a million rows of data from an SQL call against a database of Notes documents to look for field updates without ever reading any of the notes documents.
We’ll compare two databases with a million records each, and pick up the one that changed between the two in seconds — reading only a two column view that isn’t even sorted.

Sounds like this will be great fun 🙂

“Tell adminp process mailpolicy” generates errors without additional information

Today I encountered an issue when triggering the console command “tell adminp process mail poliy” .

AdminP processed the command but ended displaying

adminp1

While it is clear from the output that a problem exists, there is not enough information to determine how to correct the issue.

So I searched the KnowledgeBase and found a technote describing the issue. According to this technote, setting ADMINP_VERBOSE_POLL_TASK=1 in the notes.ini should give a more verbose output. But no way; the setting did not have any effect. I’m not sure, if the value of 1 is only valid for a Domino 7.x server. I’m running Domino 8.5 with HF1 installed.

I found out, that you have to use ADMINP_VERBOSE_POLL_TASK=2 on Domino 8.5 to get a more verbose output.

Clearing DBIID ??

Found several “Clearing DBIID” in the log of a recently updated server. The IBM Lotus Software Knowledgebase explains this entries as follows:

The entry is a new logging message specific to cases where a server (and database) use the transaction logging feature. The feature was introduced in Domino releases 8.0.2 and 8.5. The feature will also be included in Domino 7.0.4.

Read the full technote here.

EntwicklerCamp 2009

ec2Only 3 weeks until EntwicklerCamp 2009 in Gelsenkirchen starts.

The annually EntwicklerCamp conference is a 3 days event and held on the Maritim Hotel in Gelsenkirchen.

Rudi an his team again have put together an interesting agenda. I’m looking forward to learning how to ignore the No Trespassing sign and all about the new LSX toolkit.

I hope that I can figure out, what this mysterious “Lotusscript Source Code Generator” is, how to develop a Domino server addin using Java and watch Rocky Oliver bust the most popular and interesting myths suggested by the Lotus community.

I will present an ( updated ) session about “Templates, Code & Tools” on Monday.

ND8.5 – Enable Import for Lotus 1-2-3 files

After upgrading to Notes 8.5 some users are missing the option to import Lotus 1-2-3 files into a notes view.

import1

The option is available in 8.0.2 but no longer in Notes 8.5. I did a little research and found the following. Obviously the installation / upgrade has changed the VIEWIMP variables in the client’s notes.ini.

VIEWIMP1=Structured Text,0,_ISTR,,.CGN,.LTR,.STR,._UNKNOWN,,,1,
VIEWIMP2=Tabular Text,0,_ITAB,,.PRN,.RPT,.TAB,.TXT,.TSV,,1,
VIEWIMP3=vCard,0,_IVCRD,,.VCF,,1,
VIEWIMP4=Calendar File (.ics),0,_IICAL,,.ICS,,1,
VIEWIMP5=Comma Separated Value,0,_ICSV,,.CSV,,1,

There is no VIEWIMPn= for Lotus 1-2-3 files.

OK, magic happens here. I simply copied the missing line from a Notes 8.0.2 installation.

VIEWIMP6=Lotus 1-2-3,0,_IWKSV,,.123,.WK1,.WK3,.WK4,.WKS,.WR1,.WRK,,4,

and restarted the client. And … tadaaaaaaa …

import2

Is it a bug or a feature?? I have opened a PMR. Unfortunately, IBM is still in the process of gathering information about my environment instead of simply reproduce the issue …

The great code / application giveaway

Right after IBM has released the first version of a xPages based wiki on OpenNTF, elguji, the makers of IdeaJam and LinkJam released TaskJam. TaskJam is a free, simple to use IBM Lotus Domino XPages task tracking web application.
